How to remove a background in 3 steps

  1. Upload your image. Drop it onto the page or click to browse. Any common image format works.
  2. Pick a model. Fast is good enough for most photos. Portrait handles hair and skin better. Best gives you the sharpest edges on anything.
  3. Download the result. Hover the output and grab your transparent PNG. Done.

What people use it for

Product sellers put items on white backgrounds for Amazon and Etsy listings. Designers cut subjects out for social posts and collages. Streamers make transparent camera overlays. Job seekers clean up LinkedIn headshots. Teachers pull images for slides. If you have ever spent ten minutes with the magic wand tool in Photoshop, this does the same thing in a few seconds.

Three models for different jobs

Fast downloads 4.7 MB and works well on photos where the subject clearly stands out from the background. Think product shots on a table or a person against a plain wall. Processing takes 2-5 seconds on most devices.

Portrait is a 44 MB model trained specifically for people. It handles tricky edges like flyaway hair, earrings, and semi-transparent clothing better than the other two. If you are removing backgrounds from headshots or full-body photos, start here.

Best is 176 MB and produces the cleanest edges across every type of subject. It takes longer to download the first time but the results are worth it for detailed work. Good for product photography, animals, plants, and complex scenes.

How the AI works

The tool downloads a neural network trained on millions of images and runs it directly in your browser using ONNX Runtime with WebAssembly. The model looks at your photo and creates a pixel-level mask that separates the subject from the background. That mask becomes the alpha channel in your output PNG. No server is involved at any point. The model file is cached after the first download so subsequent uses load instantly.

Your photos never leave your device

Every other background remover uploads your image to a server. This one does not. The AI model downloads once and runs entirely in your browser. There is no account to create, no data to share, and no server that ever sees your photos. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works. Your images stay yours.

FAQ

Is this really free?
Yes. No watermark, no per-image limit, no premium tier.
What image formats can I upload?
PNG, JPG, WebP, AVIF, BMP, GIF, and TIFF. The output is always a transparent PNG.
Which model should I pick?
Start with Fast. Switch to Portrait if you are cutting out a person and the hair looks rough. Use Best when you need the cleanest edges on any subject.
Why is the first run slow?
The AI model downloads once. Fast is 4.7 MB, Portrait is 44 MB, Best is 176 MB. After that it is cached in your browser and loads instantly.
Can I use the result for commercial projects?
Yes. There are no usage restrictions on the output. Use it for your store, ads, presentations, or anything else.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Chrome and Safari on modern phones work fine. Processing is slower than on a laptop since phones have less power.
How does the AI background removal work?
The tool runs a segmentation neural network in your browser using ONNX Runtime. The model identifies the main subject in the image and creates a mask. The mask is applied as an alpha channel to produce a transparent PNG.
How is this different from remove.bg?
remove.bg uploads your photo to their servers. This tool runs the AI entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device.
Is there an API?
Not yet. For now the tool is browser-only.
