How it works

This tool uses threshold-based image processing to separate ink strokes from paper. Pixels brighter than the threshold become transparent, while darker pixels (your signature) stay intact. The result is a clean PNG with an alpha channel you can layer over any background.

Unlike AI background removers that need large neural network models, this approach is lightweight and fast. The processing engine is about 200 KB and runs via WebAssembly in your browser.

Tips for best results

Use a scan or a well-lit photo with even lighting. Shadows across the page can leave dark patches that the tool treats as ink. If your paper has a cream or gray tint, increase the color tolerance setting until the background clears up.

For signatures with very thin strokes, lower the threshold to avoid clipping the lighter parts of the ink. The edge smoothing slider can help blend jagged pixel edges on low-resolution scans.

FAQ

What types of signatures work best?
Any dark ink on a light background. Ballpoint pen, marker, felt-tip, and printed signatures all work well. Very light pencil or faded stamps may need a lower threshold setting.
Does this work with colored ink?
Yes. Blue, black, and red ink all work out of the box. For very light colors like yellow or pastel inks, lower the threshold and raise the color tolerance.
How do I get a clean result from a phone photo?
Take the photo in good lighting with the paper flat. Avoid shadows across the signature. If the paper looks gray in the photo, increase the color tolerance setting.
What is the threshold setting?
It controls how bright a pixel needs to be before it gets treated as background. The default of 200 works for most scans. Lower it if too much ink is being removed. Raise it if the paper background is not fully transparent.
What does color tolerance do?
Paper is rarely pure white. It can be cream, yellowish, or slightly gray. Color tolerance lets the tool treat those off-white shades as background too. Increase it for tinted or aged paper.
Is my signature uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser using WebAssembly. Your image never leaves your device. There is no server, no upload, and no storage.
Can I process multiple signatures at once?
Yes. Drop as many files as you need. They get queued and processed one after another. Download them individually or all at once as a ZIP.
What format is the output?
Transparent PNG. The background is fully removed, leaving just the ink strokes with an alpha channel. You can paste it directly into documents, PDFs, or design tools.
