How to remove background from an animated GIF

  1. Drop your GIF. Drag it onto the page or click to browse. Animated WebP files also work.
  2. Pick a model. Fast processes frames quickly. Best gives sharper edges but takes longer per frame.
  3. Download the result. You get an animated WebP with transparent backgrounds on every frame. All timing and loop settings are preserved.

Why animated WebP instead of transparent GIF?

GIF only supports 1-bit transparency: each pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible. That creates jagged edges around subjects, especially on hair, fur, and curved shapes.

Animated WebP supports full alpha transparency with smooth semi-transparent pixels. The edges look clean at any size, and the file is typically 30-50% smaller than an equivalent GIF. Every modern browser supports animated WebP.

Tips for best results

Animations with a consistent background (solid color, static scene) process cleanly. If the background moves or changes between frames, some frames may have slightly different cutout edges.

For best quality on people or characters, use the Portrait model. For product animations or screen recordings, Fast is usually sufficient.

FAQ

Does it remove the background from every frame?
Yes. The tool processes each frame individually and produces an animated WebP with the background removed from every frame. Timing and loop settings stay the same.
What is the output format?
Animated WebP. GIF does not support semi-transparent pixels, so the result is always an animated WebP which handles transparency properly across all frames.
Is this free?
Yes. No watermark, no limit on frames or file size, no sign-up.
Does it upload my GIF to a server?
No. The AI model runs entirely in your browser. Your animated GIF never leaves your device.
Why is it slow on large GIFs?
Each frame is processed by the AI model separately. A 60-frame GIF means 60 passes through the neural network. On a modern laptop this takes 10-30 seconds depending on resolution and the model you pick.
Which model should I use for animations?
Start with Fast. It handles most animations well and processes frames quickly. Use Best only if edges look rough on a specific frame. Portrait is designed for people and may not improve results on non-human subjects.
Can I also remove backgrounds from animated WebP?
Yes. Drop an animated WebP and it works the same way. Each frame gets processed and you get an animated WebP output with transparent backgrounds.
